Voice of Russia and WRN Broadcast bring news and views to London.

WRN Broadcast (WRNB) has worked with Voice of Russia, the oldest Russian broadcasting company, to launch Voice of Russia from the World Radio Network, a new DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) radio service providing a wide range of programmes about Russia and Russia's viewpoint on world events to listeners in London, ranging from the most important political events on the global agenda to arts, culture, science and sports. The new service, broadcast in English, is available on DAB throughout London.

Although WRNB is one of the leading international broadcast managed services companies and works with some of the best known television and studio brands in the world, its origins are in international radio distribution and Voice of Russia has been working with WRNB for almost 20 years. The World Radio Network is WRN Broadcast's international radio distribution brand and delivers mainly public service content to a worldwide audience in several languages on every continent.

WRNB is the licence holder of Voice of Russia from the World Radio Network and in common with other news and current affairs based channels there will be segments from other world broadcasters to provide a rounded view of world affairs. Voice of Russia is in the process of setting up studios and production facilities at WRNB's London base, which will house dedicated production staff and journalists in order to increase the London-based content of the channel. Additional material will be produced in Moscow and WRNB will schedule and playout the channel.

"One of our goals is to get closer to our audiences," said Andrey Bystritsky, Chairman, Voice of Russia, "so it made perfect sense to have the channel's base in the heart of London, and to partner with a specialist like WRN Broadcast who will drive the channel's success." Voice of Russia also broadcasts in over 160 countries and has channels in New York and Washington.

David Treadway, Managing Director, WRN Broadcast said, "We have worked with Voice of Russia for many years and are responsible for delivering their programmes to audiences in places as diverse as Afghanistan and Buenos Aires. Therefore, we are delighted to have been able to devise and manage a channel right here in London, so increasing even further the range, quality and choice of radio services in the capital."

Ford Ennals, CEO, Digital Radio UK, welcomed the arrival of the new radio station and said, "London is a vibrant, multicultural city and this is reflected in its digital radio services which include 60 digital-only stations, including those serving audiences from all over the world. We welcome the launch of Voice of Russia from the World Radio Network and see it as an excellent addition to London's rich radio diversity."

                                                    *  *  *

Opportunity subject to contract and availability. For more information please contact sales@wrnbroadcast.com

NME Radio Stays on Digital TV

WRN Broadcast has just signed a new agreement with Town and Country that will continue the existing broadcast of NME Radio onto the digital TV platforms Sky and Freesat.

NME Radio has been a client of WRN Broadcast since June 2008, when the station launched, providing both the uplink and capacity onto Eurobird 1 to service both the Sky and Freesat platforms. NME Radio provides its audience with the best in new and alternative music, music news, gig-guides and live sessions.

Absolute Radio Launches Absolute Radio 90s

With the ongoing success of their most recent addition, Absolute 80s, which recorded a weekly reach of 264,000 and total hours of 1.4m a week in the latest UK Rajar results as well as being awarded the Best Specialist Radio Station at the recent Freesat Awards, Absolute Radio are hoping for similar achievement with Absolute Radio 90s.

Donnach O'Driscoll, Absolute Radio Chief Executive, said: "Absolute 80s has been a runway success and listeners love it, which is why we're expanding the station on to a national platform. With Absolute 80s we struck on a winner so extending the format with this 90s proposition was the natural progression."

The Absolute Radio network currently includes Absolute Radio, Absolute 80s, Absolute Classic Rock and online 'user-controlled' station Dabbl.

Family Radio Expansion Continues

Following the recent launch of Family Radio onto Atlantic Bird 4A, covering the North Africa and Middle East region, WRN Broadcast has now facilitated the launch of the station on Intelsat 10 (Ku Band). The satellite covers a large proportion of the sub-Saharan region and predominately services audiences in South Africa.

WRN Broadcast Creates Media Village

WRN Broadcast is launching a new media village to rival London's Soho, and aims to bring together a host of like-minded broadcast companies, creating a culture for increased creativity as well as cost-efficient studio and office space.

Having recently acquired the three storey building adjacent to our Vauxhall Media Centre base, the first tenant is ethical entertainment channel broadcaster OHTV, which is basing itself in a purpose-built studio created by WRN Broadcast that includes lighting and gantries, a gallery and a green room. Whilst it is for the use of OHTV primarily, the space is also available to other companies during downtime.

Akin Salami, CEO, OHTV, says: "Locating in WRN Broadcast's media village gives us purpose-built facilities, more office space, improved services and reduced costs; the ideal scenario. We look forward to seeing which other companies will join us."

OHTV joins Jazz FM, which has been resident in WRN Broadcast's building since April 2009, leasing two studios and office space enabling Jazz FM to be broadcast live from the WRN Broadcast building. WRN Broadcast also provides Jazz FM's uplink and capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite for broadcast on Sky and Freesat.

The new media village offers clients a number of business advantages including access to our strong communications infrastructure which is very cost effective for clients. The area is also on the cusp of major regeneration, led by the development of the Battersea Power Station site and the new US embassy. If you are interested in becoming part of the WRN Broadcast Media Village, please contact sales@wrnbroadcast.com for further information.

Digital Radio Update
UK Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has recently commented on the future of radio including the role of the BBC, the relationship between broadcasters and manufactures and the digital switchover.
He indicated that the BBC had a key role to play in the switchover to DAB but there was still some way to go before the majority of listeners adopt digital radio over analogue.

"Listeners need to be persuaded that the content on offer is compelling, that the quality is high and that digital radios, at home or in the car, are affordable and have listening quality that is at least as good as FM."

Mr Vaizey also hoped that radio in the UK mirrored the success of Digital TV by offering a wide variety of choice through multi-channel national radio.

Despite external pressure, there is still no "cast-iron commitment" for the date of the digital switchover despite the previous Labour Government providing a target date of 2015.
"That means a digital radio switchover in 2015 remains a target we aspire to, but for which a lot more work needs to be done before we can make it a cast-iron commitment."

WRN Broadcast Creates Media Village

London, July 29, 2010: International broadcast services company WRN Broadcast today announced the launch of a new Vauxhall-based media village. It aims to bring together a host of like-minded broadcast companies, creating a culture for increased creativity as well as cost-efficient studio and office space.

Having recently acquired the three storey building adjacent to its Vauxhall Media Centre base, WRN Broadcast also announced that inspirational entertainment broadcaster OHTV will be one of the first companies to take advantage of the media village offering, joining Jazz FM which has been resident in WRN Broadcast's building since April 2009.

David Treadway, MD, WRN Broadcast, says: "The vision is for complimentary companies to work with each other, developing a creative community around the media hub in south London. The new media village offers clients flexible facilities, lower costs and easy access to central London. We're currently talking to potential clients and hope to create a media hub that could eventually rival the likes of Soho or Shoreditch. Our message is simple: Come to Vauxhall."

Foundation client OHTV has a new TV studio set up with lighting and gantries, gallery and green room purpose-built by WRN Broadcast. Whilst it is for the use of OHTV primarily, the space is also available to other companies during downtime. WRN Broadcast is also providing OHTV with capacity on the Eurobird satellite at 28.5˚E for broadcast on Sky, as well as office space.

Akin Salami, CEO, OHTV, says: "Locating in WRN Broadcast's media village gives us purpose-built facilities, more office space, improved services and reduced costs; the ideal scenario. We look forward to seeing which other companies will join us."

WRN Broadcast aims to attract further television and radio broadcasters, in addition to other creative and digital companies, which will be able to take advantage of the facility's range of services. These include playout, content management and file delivery, satellite and fibre distribution, VOD, IPTV and mobile solutions, data centre services and channel management.

The media village offers clients a number of business advantages. The site has a strong communications infrastructure; on-site clients don't need to connect via expensive fibre, instead using WRN Broadcast's facilities and so reducing costs. The building is located very near to the Cable and Wireless exchange and next door to a primary UK BT connectivity centre. In addition, Vauxhall is in close proximity to central London but offers more space and a lower cost base. The area is also on the cusp of major regeneration, led by the development of the Battersea Power Station site and the new US embassy.

Jazz FM became a tenant of WRN Broadcast in April 2009, leasing two studios and office space. This enables Jazz FM to be broadcast live from the WRN Broadcast building. WRN Broadcast also handled Jazz FM's uplink and capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite, provides the radio station with its bespoke EPG submission and management software and coordinated Jazz FM's launch onto channel #729 on Freesat.

WRN Launches New Brand and Facility
At the end of April 2010, WRN unveiled its new brand identity. Henceforth, the company will be known as WRN Broadcast, a name that encapsulates who we are and what we do - that is, providing professional broadcast solutions to our growing list of clients worldwide.

We recently relaunched our website and our new visual identity is a further development of that look and feel, but with the addition of some vibrant colour. This represents not only the growing part of our business, television ingest, playout and managed services, but also the fact that radio continues to deliver some of the best pictures in the minds of the listeners, where the colours can be even more vibrant for some.

The change of company name reflects last year's acquisition of TSI Broadcast and the integration of the two companies is now complete. We have completely rebuilt our technical facilities and our new Media Centre represents one of the finest state-of-the-art ingest and playout centres in Europe. Not only has this resulted in an increased range of broadcast services but has also seen our technical staffing levels double as we continue to invest in service delivery for clients.

David Treadway, WRN Broadcast's Managing Director, says: "We intend to build on our broadcasting and digital expertise to offer a wide range of innovative and cost-effective services to international television broadcasters and brands, in addition to our longstanding radio clients. The new Media Centre is central to this and will enable WRN Broadcast to take centre stage in TV and digital platforms as well as radio broadcasting."

If you would like any more information about the rebrand or the new Media Centre, please contact the Sales team on sales@wrnbroadcast.com

Sony Radio Academy Awards
The UK's most prestigious radio accolades, the Sony Radio Academy Awards, were this year held at the Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair and hosted by Chris Evans.

The Awards proved to be a successful night for clients of WRN Broadcast, with both NME Radio and Absolute Radio scooping up Gold Awards, whilst Jazz FM - fellow inhabitants of the WRN Broadcast Media Village - picked up a Silver. Last, but not least, long standing client Prision Radio took home a Bronze.

For all that attended, it was clear that radio continues to attract a high volume of talented individuals to the industry. Client Account Managers, Simon Walter and Fleur Nittolo both attended the awards and were the first to join in the celebrations with our victorious clients.

For more information about the Sony Awards refer to http://www.radioawards.org/

Radio Netherlands launches Radio with Pictures
Renowned international broadcaster Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) was the first client to take advantage of WRN Broadcast's new and revolutionary satellite product. Radio with Pictures allows satellite and cable radio stations to display visual content on TV screens. Visuals could include live graphics, existing web content or interactive SMS and Twitter feeds.

WRN Broadcast's Managing Director, David Treadway, said: "Many radio stations use satellite and cable to extend their reach as these platforms offer relatively low barriers to entry, with lower costs and fewer regulatory hurdles. However, audiences prefer to have something on their TV screen rather than it being blank.

"Radio with Pictures addresses this missed opportunity, transforming satellite radio channels on digital TV platforms into full-service television channels but at a fraction of the cost of TV. This enables broadcasters to interact with their audience in a new way whilst also creating potential new revenue streams."

For more information about Radio with Pictures and how the product can add a new and innovative dimension to your existing radio service, please contact the Sales Department on sales@wrnbroadcast.com or +44 20 7896 4020.

WRN Broadcast launches Family Radio on Atlantic Bird 4A

Family Radio have a 50 year heritage in producing and broadcasting Christian content received in a range of major languages throughout the world. A client of WRN Broadcast for many years, this new service represents an exciting opportunity for Family Radio to broadcast all three of their international radio channels to a growing audience in the region.

WRN Broadcast continues to provide Family Radio with consultation and bespoke solutions for numerous opportunities in line with the organisation's wider broadcasting strategy.

We have the capabilities to launch clients with radio content onto AtlanticBird 4A and a range of international satellite platforms. For more information please contact the Sales Department on sales@wrnbroadcast.com and +44 20 7896 4020.

Freesat is the new digital UK platform that launched in May 2008, providing the first HD digital TV and radio, complete with interactivity, all from one subscription, contract-free box. The platform makes HD TV available to 98% of UK households, some of which have previously been unable to benefit from this technology due to coverage, price or subscription contracts. Since the launch of Freesat, over one million receivers have been sold to British homes. As Freesat is served by the Eurobird 1 satellite, existing Sky broadcasters can gain access to this new platform at very little cost.

WRN Broadcast is able to supply satellite uplink and capacity and EPG services for Freesat and is also able to guide clients through the entire process of launching on the platform.

WRN Broadcast Offers Mass Channel Delivery Solution

London, June 1, 2010: International broadcast services company WRN Broadcast today announced that it has won a major contract with Wananchi to provide encoding, multiplexing and fibre delivery of more than 12 channels for distribution on Zuku, Kenya's first triple-play service. The channels include MSNBC, Eurosport News, Nickelodeon and Bloomberg, with more to follow.

WRN Broadcast will provide Wananchi with the ability to receive services from virtually any broadcaster worldwide, using WRN Broadcast's London teleport, international satellite network and global fibre connectivity. WRN Broadcast will then encode and multiplex all services into one transport stream for onward delivery via the company's POPS at major international data centres and dedicated fibre to Wananchi's base in Nairobi.

Euan Fannell, CEO, Wananchi Group, says: "Our Zuku platform is East Africa's first triple-play provider and enables local viewers to watch the best local and international content. WRN Broadcast's unique delivery solution offers our subscribers the opportunity to watch previously unreachable channels from around the world."

Services for Wananchi will be operated through WRN Broadcast's brand new Media Centre, which features a state-of-the-art RF system, Tandberg IRD's and brand new Harmonic Pro Stream 1000 multiplexers.

David Treadway, MD, WRN Broadcast, adds: "Wananchi needed a partner that could offer a robust delivery method, due to the high profile nature of the channels and the strict SLAs in the carriage agreements. We can provide a reliable, cost-effective solution due to our unique location, operation through our new Media Centre and our international satellite and fibre connectivity, which gives us the ability to downlink almost all satellites worldwide."

This is our first mass channel delivery between the UK and Africa, and we look forward to building more links with this emerging market, which is a major focus for broadcasters around the World Cup this summer."

WRN Launches Revolutionary - Radio With Pictures

London, April 7, 2010: International broadcast services company WRN today announced the launch of its Radio with Pictures product, which aims to revolutionise satellite radio broadcasting by allowing satellite and cable radio stations to display visual content on TV screens. Visuals could include live graphics, existing web content or interactive SMS and Twitter feeds.

Renowned international broadcaster Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) is the first of WRN's clients to take advantage of the product for its Arabic service, which broadcasts to the Middle East on Arabsat and Nilesat, enabling it to transform the radio programming into a 24-hour TV channel.

David Treadway, MD, WRN, comments: "Many radio stations use satellite and cable to extend their reach as these platforms offer relatively low barriers to entry, with lower costs and fewer regulatory hurdles. However audiences prefer to have something on their TV screen rather than it being blank.

"Radio with Pictures addresses this missed opportunity, transforming satellite radio channels on digital TV platforms into full-service television channels but at a fraction of the cost of TV. This enables broadcasters to interact with their audience in a new way whilst also creating potential new revenue streams."

Unique features include:
•	Radio stations appear alongside television stations on the Electronic Programme Guide and not via a separate radio menu, widening the potential audience.
•	Web content can be repurposed so that it is used to reach vast TV audiences that may have no internet access or where access may be locally restricted.
•	Listeners' SMS messages and Twitter tweets can be displayed on the screen increasing audience interactivity.
•	Live visuals from the studio can accompany radio programming or content can be uploaded in advance.
•	Bandwidth requirement is lower than for conventional graphic transmission, meaning costs are kept low while maintaining compatibility with existing set-top boxes.

Jan Willem Drexhage, head of Programme Distribution, Radio Netherlands Worldwide, says: "Research has shown that satellite audiences in Africa and the Middle East tend not to press the radio button, but as Radio with Pictures lists the station as a TV channel with attractive visual content we are opening up our programming to a much wider audience. In addition, although we only produce a few hours per day of Arabic radio programming, Radio With Pictures transforms our Huna Amsterdam radio magazine into a 24-hour semi television channel."
The radio magazine is aired every evening from 1800-2200 UTC/GMT from Monday-Friday where popular Arabic music can be heard outside this period.

VOR Begins New Relay to Buenos Aires
WRN is pleased to announce its first foray into a much sought-after market with the launch of Voice of Russia on FM in Argentina.

Using our own expert in the region, WRN facilitated an airtime deal for the Russian State broadcaster on a very popular local FM station which gives VOR daily and weekend placement of its Spanish language programmes.

The station is located in Argentina's bustling capital and the transmission area covers the Greater Buenos Aires region, encompassing an estimated 13 million residents.

Voice of Russia's Chairman, Andrey Bystritskiy said: "We are happy to start broadcasting regularly in Argentina. In our view, the possibility of direct communication from Russian to Argentinean communities is extremely important. We will try to provide Argentina with full, honest and interesting information about events in Russia, as well as insight into how Russians see world developments".

WRN's access to FM in Argentina is just one of many relay opportunities that we offer around the world.

NHK Begins SW Service to Brazil
WRN has recently launched a new shortwave service to Brazil for NHK as part of its ongoing commitment to increasing NHK's global broadcast presence.

NHK World Radio is the Japanese International State Broadcaster which broadcasts news, information and entertainment programmes focusing on Japan and Asia. NHK comprises a general service which broadcasts worldwide in Japanese and English and a regional service which broadcasts to specific geographical zones in 17 different languages.

Over the years, WRN has been instrumental in extending NHK's worldwide coverage; first in South Asia and the Middle East and now, after the addition of this latest service, Latin America. WRN has provided shortwave services for NHK's radio programming in Portuguese to Brazil, which commenced broadcasting on 28th March.

WRN has the means and capabilities to provide cost effective and resilient shortwave services to virtually anywhere in the world.

For more information regarding WRN's shortwave services, please contact the WRN Sales Team at sales@wrn.org.

Freesat TV Signs One-millionth Customer
Freesat, the joint venture free-to-air satellite service between the BBC and ITV, has this week announced that it has reached the one million mark in terms of receiver sales.

Emma Scott, Managing Director of Freesat, commented: "Hitting one million is a significant milestone for Freesat and gives us a great foundation for further growth, specifically with the millions of UK homes that have HD TVs but no HD service".

Freesat claimed that 40% (400,000) of its customers are former subscribers to Sky's pay-TV service.

Despite the fact that the service has only been in existence 18 months, the last six months has seen its most impressive growth to date. Over Christmas and New Year 2009, Freesat introduced 250,000 new customers to the service and, as a result, recorded a 30% sales growth.

Freesat plans to launch ITV's on-demand service ITV Player this summer and a full ITV HD channel next month.

WRN has the full capability to launch both radio and TV broadcasters onto Freesat, including providing satellite uplink and capacity and EPG submission and management service. WRN has successfully launched 7 x channels on the platform since its inception. For existing Sky customers who already use the Eurobird 1 satellite system which feeds Freesat, the process is extremely straightforward and cost-effective.

Last Chance for Radio on Sky
This is the last chance for broadcasters wishing to access Sky in the UK via the UK's premier direct to home platform, Sky Digital, in 9 million homes in the UK and Ireland.

In October 2007, BSkyB dealt a major blow to the UK TV and Radio industries when it announced its decision not to launch any further TV or radio stations onto Sky. Citing limitations of legacy set top box capacity, BSkyB announced a closure of the platform.

Since then, any new radio broadcaster wishing to access the EPG has had to undertake a private purchase of an EPG number from an existing station on the platform. These opportunities have been very few and far between.

However, WRN has one channel available either for sale or for hire. Radio broadcasters will be able to benefit from instant access to the otherwise-closed Sky platform, uplink and 128 kbps stereo capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite, an Ofcom licence, EPG management and submission services and 24/7 monitoring and support.

This opportunity is limited and will expire within the next 30 days. For more information please contact sales@wrn.org

Broadcast Video Expo
Broadcast Video Expo is opening this week, held between 16-18 February at Earls Court.

BVE's are a fantastic opportunity for leading audio and video manufacturers and suppliers to exhibit their organisations and meet with forward-thinking media leaders.

Sky getting ready to announce 10 million subscribers
Predictions are running high that Sky will hit its target of 10 million subscribers in the last quarter of this year. The Royal Bank of Scotland has even gone as far as advising clients to snap up shares in the satellite broadcaster, claiming that the future of BSkyB is so bright that you "will need sunglasses".

Although the broker believes that growth in customer numbers will moderate from then on, it argues that a number of new product launches, especially three-dimensional technology - hence the sunglasses metaphor - will boost revenues. Sky is launching a 3D TV channel this year and rumours at 2009's MIPCOM and IBC conferences suggest that there are another 9 channels on the way.

Sky is still the most desirable platform for broadcasters to reach audiences throughout the UK with no sign of audience figures slowing down. For more information about how WRN can launch you on Sky, contact sales@wrn.org

The channel is available either for sale or for hire.

Radio broadcasters will be able to benefit from an instant access to the otherwise-closed Sky platform, uplink and 128 kbps stereo capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite, an Ofcom licence, EPG management and submission services and 24/7 monitoring and support.

Opportunity subject to contract and availability. For more information please contact sales@wrn.org.

WRN Round Up of 2009
As the year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the achievements and successes of the previous 12 months. At a time of global economic recession during which many other companies are contracting, WRN has been expanding and 2009 marks a year of milestones for the company.

Radio is and always will be part of our core business and the World Radio Network remains an important part of both our heritage and our future. There have been a multitude of highlights in 2009 and these have included the launch of the new listener website (more info on this below); the addition of programming from Swissinfo, Danger Zone and Deutsche Welle to the WRN English network schedules and the arrival of NHK on WRN Arabic. This is in addition to special features such as the celebration of the anniversary of the People's Republic of China for Radio Guangdong.

WRN would like to thank you, our rebroadcast clients, for your ongoing commitment to WRN. We look forward to continuing to deliver you the global voices and diverse views of our network clients into 2010 and beyond.

WRN Launches new Website
WRN has recently launched its new website at www.wrn.org, providing a much improved and updated listener portal, streaming World Radio Network content live and on demand and featuring more enhanced, personalised and user-friendly functionality for our network listeners.

The listener site allows users the option to register an account, to set up personalised play-lists of on-demand radio shows and leave instant comments next to each programme. A similar feature attached to the WRN in-built player means that listeners can leave tags inside a show. These tags are attached to certain times as the show is played out, and listeners comments might refer to the start of a particular topic or just be a shared thought on a subject raised in the show.

If you have any feedback on the new website we would love to hear from you. Please send your emails to contactus@wrn.org

WRN Network Voices: Coverage of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Monday, 9th of November 1989 is a date that resonates with many of our European listeners. The fall of the Berlin Wall was a great victory for many that were segregated by the division of East and West. Built by the German Democratic Republic in 1961, the wall enclosed the city of West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin.

Several of WRN's content clients covered the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall, including, of course, Deutsche Welle, Voice of Russia, Radio Romania International and Radio France International. Programmes focused on the perspectives of people who were separated by the wall at the time and those who witnessed the fall.

WRN Round Up of 2009

As the year draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the achievements and successes of the previous 12 months. At a time of global economic recession during which many other companies are contracting, WRN has been expanding and 2009 marks a year of milestones for the company, beginning with the appointment of David Treadway to the role of Managing Director in February. Under his steerage, WRN acquired broadcast services company TSI Broadcast in April, following which we have seen a dramatic expansion in our product and service portfolio of Managed Services for television.

We have also made a large investment in enterprise class solutions and a range of content management services including encoding, transcoding, re-purposing, storage and archiving. In addition, WRN is now fully HD capable. Of course, radio is and always will be part of our core business and remains an important part of both our heritage and our future. Short Wave is still seen by many of our clients to be a vital technology to reach large regions and closed societies and, for clients such as NHK, who expanded their shortwave services this year, it is a hugely important part of the WRN inventory.

There have been a multitude of highlights of 2009 and these have included winning new clients such as Warner Bros., Manchester United TV, IMG, West African Democracy Radio and Radio Mada; the launch of the new corporate and listener website, the successful launch of the groundbreaking Radio With Pictures product for RNW's Arabic service and the securing of a major contract with a new DTH platform in Africa, distribution on which we will be offering to WRN clients in the new year.

Over the coming few months you will begin to see WRN adopt a new brand identity that fully reflects our commitment to radio and television broadcast services and distribution worldwide. We will also be launching our brand new Media Centre, which incorporates dedicated ingest suites, state of the art technology and a client viewing area.

WRN would like to thank you, our clients, for your ongoing commitment to WRN. You are the lifeblood of the business and, without you, we would not be able to build on our successes. We look forward to continuing to deliver you quality and innovative services at cost-effective prices into 2010 and beyond.

Rare Opportunity to Access DAB in London
WRN is pleased to announce that it has a very rare and exciting opportunity for radio clients wishing to access DAB in London - one of the most sought after cities for broadcasters, both large and small.
Currently, the only way to obtain a radio licence to broadcast to London is to buy one. There is no FM or DAB capacity available in London, so a new entrant needs to purchase an existing station or contract for bandwidth.

However, WRN has an opportunity for clients to access DAB on one of the three greater London multiplexes serving a total audience of some ten million potential listeners.

This offer is only available for a very limited period. Therefore, if you are interested in taking DAB in London, please contact the WRN Sales team as soon as possible at sales@wrn.org

Limited Opportunity to Launch Radio Channel on Sky
In October 2007, BSkyB dealt a major blow to the UK TV and Radio industries when it announced its decision not to launch any further TV or radio stations onto Sky. Citing limitations of legacy set top box capacity, BSkyB announced a closure of the platform.

Since then, any new radio broadcaster wishing to access the EPG has had to undertake a private purchase of an EPG number from an existing station on the platform. These opportunities have been very few and far between.

However, WRN has a window for radio broadcasters wishing to access the Sky platform, which is still the leading digital DTH platform in over 9 million homes in the UK and Ireland. The channel is available for either sale or for hire.

Radio broadcasters will be able to benefit from an instant access to the otherwise-closed Sky platform, uplink and 128 kbps stereo capacity on the Eurobird 1 satellite, an Ofcom licence, EPG management and submission services and 24/7 monitoring and support.

For more information on this or any of WRN's Sky services, please contact sales@wrn.org

Absolute 80s to Replace Xtreme
December will see the launch of a new Absolute Radio station - Absolute 80s. Replacing the channel Absolute Xtreme, which launched in 2005 as Virgin Radio Xtreme, Absolute 80s will be positioned as a pop and rock music station aimed at 30 to 54-year-olds. Initially the station will be available on DAB in London and online and digital TV nationwide throughout the UK, with the possibility of expanded DAB transmission in other parts of the country later.

Programming previously offered by Absolute Xtreme will morph into the station's newly launched dabbl offering. The station will fine-tune its music policy to include new music, live music and tracks from the 90s and Noughties. Dabbl, Absolute Radio's digital radio station, was launched earlier this year with a focus on live-music programming and will broadcast online and on DAB 24 hours a day across Swindon, Bristol and Essex and from 7pm - 6am in London.

The launch of Absolute 80s brings the number of stations operated by Absolute Radio to four. It already runs Absolute Radio, Absolute Radio Classic Rock and dabbl.

WRN provides Absolute with uplink and capacity services on the Eurobird1 satellite for distribution of Absolute Radio, Absolute Xtreme and Absolute Classic Rock on Sky Digital.

Radio Australia Celebrates 70th Anniversary
This year marks the 70th anniversary of Radio Australia, the international radio and online service of the Australian national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

This December the septuagenarian broadcaster will celebrate 70 years of being at the forefront of covering news and current affairs, political and social change and key events in Asia and the Pacific. There will be festivities across the airwaves, along with contributions from listeners and partners around the world.

Radio Australia has long been a client of WRN's; who provides it not only with coverage on the WRN English networks for Europe and North America, but dedicated backhaul and satellite services.

Radio Academy Hall of Fame
WRN recently hosted several clients at Sir Terry Wogan's induction into the Radio Academy Hall Of Fame as well as being awarded the PRS John Peel Outstanding Contribution To Music Award presented by Take That front-man Gary Barlow.

A very emotional Chris Evans honoured the life and career of Sir Terry, whilst fellow presenters Chris Moyles and Christian O Connell paid tribute.

WRN was very pleased to be able to treat clients to this the fantastic occasion, not only to see one of the great stars of the airwaves (and a British national treasure) accept the accolade, but also for the opportunity to network with the cream of the UK radio industry.

The Radio Academy is a registered charity dedicated to the encouragement, recognition and promotion of excellence in UK broadcasting and audio production.

WRN Incorporates Pharos Mediator 4.2
WRN has closed a deal with the integrated media management, workflow and playout company, Pharos, to incorporate the latest Pharos Mediator 4.2 system as part of its company-wide commitment to providing high quality TV ingest and playout solutions.

On the back of the recent TSI acquisition, WRN is using its larger scale integrated services environment as a key value add to both new customer and its existing client base.

Mediator is content agnostic and allows WRN to create workflows and content services that match the unique needs of individual clients.

If you are interested in discussing WRN's media management capabilities, contact sales@wrn.org.

Access DTH in Italy via Sky Italia

WRN is pleased to announce that this month it has successfully launched the Word Television Network onto Italy's premiere DTH platform, Sky Italia, on EPG 823. As The Word Network's chosen provider to backhaul its content on transatlantic fibre and uplink onto Eurobird 1 for the Sky platform in the UK, WRN was the natural choice for helping The Word to expand its global reach. Capitalising on its good relationship with Sky Italia, WRN provided The Word with a full consultancy service to ensure a successful launch.

SKY Italia is an Italian digital satellite television platform owned by News Corporation, which launched on 31 July 2003. It is similar in many ways to BSkyB's Sky Digital in the United Kingdom and Ireland and like that network, it is a major sports broadcaster.

WRN can provide consultancy on worldwide DTH platform launches and provide a full, technical turnkey solution for broadcasters wishing to reach other markets.

If you would like to discuss you global broadcasting aspirations, including accessing DTH, please contact
sales@wrn.org

Freesat Exceeds 600,000
Receivers
Freesat is a BBC and ITV-backed satellite programming system that provides viewers with the first HD digital TV and Radio with complete interactivity from one box. It was launched 18 months ago in May 2008. The system has now sold over 600,000 set-top boxes in total, and 200,000 were sold during the summer period as more and cheaper receivers came onto the market.

The number of integrated TV sets that are now available with Freesat pre-installed has helped to push the number of sales up. These numbers go some way to showing that, despite the climate of economic uncertainty, the outlook for Freesat remains strong with continuing sales from customers new to satellite TV and radio and from those wishing to make use of their existing satellite dish.
Freesat is free of charge as part of the UK's commitment to make a core number of channels available to the whole population ahead of the nation's analogue switch off, which is already well-advanced but which will see the final regions of the UK go dark during 2012.
BSkyB also has a ‘Freesat-by-Sky' product and service but does not reveal those numbers. Sky has some 9.45m paying subscribers.

WRN can guide broadcasters wishing to go onto Freesat through the launch process, having already successful placed eight channels on the EPG. WRN provides its clients with uplink and capacity services on the Eurobird satellite (used to feed Freesat) and EPG services. For more information please contact the Sales team on sales@wrn.org

Sirius 4 Satellite for Africa
Sirius 4 is a platform covering the majority of Africa. Launched in 2007 and with a planned 15 year lifetime, Sirius 4 satellite has six transponders, some of which are already contracted to provide DTH bouquets - mainly in South Africa and Nigeria. There are also a growing number of religious neighborhoods, making the satellite an attractive proposition for Christian clients.
Sirius 4 also presents broadcasters with a low cost opportunity to reach Africa - hitherto very difficult to access via ku band capacity.

It is located at 4.8° East and uses Ku which can be received with 90cm dishes.

Sportel 2009
Representatives from the WRN Sales and Business Development Team attended this year's SportelMonaco, the 20th anniversary of the ever growing Convention, the world's largest and most important market for international sports content executives

This years Sportel was launched against the backdrop of the first ever live streaming of an England International Football Match. The rights holders hailed the success of the match with 200,000 people paying to view the match online; in total an estimated 500,000 people watched the game. The rights owners (Kentaro) have so far been reticent about revealing the specific amount of revenue generated through steaming the game online, but with the BBC only offering £900,000 for the rights, it is assumed that it was a financial success, and proved that viewers are willing to consume their media in this way.

However UEFA urged caution, stating that the revenue generated for the rights of the matches should be optimised, rather than maximised, to ensure that as many fans as possible have access to the matches.

Attendance appeared to be down on last year, but with many exhibitors maintaining their presence including the NBA, Eurosport, the BBC and MP Silva, there was lots to interest the attendees.

Even after the tough year Setanta have had, it still managed to host its legendary party at the Monaco Irish Bar.

Key topics of discussion included maximising content available to fans through the digitalising of archive content and the expansion of broadcast coverage into new territories.

The awards celebrate the success and reward excellence in international TV, radio and online production.

With over 90% of the global TV audience not having English as a first language, this event is truly global, and actively encourages entries in other languages.

WRN Acquires TSI Broadcast
In April 2009 WRN acquired TSI Broadcast, the TV ingest and playout company. The acquisition gives WRN an excellent platform for growth by expanding the service portfolio alongside its established broadcast management and solutions products, as well as providing the opportunity to compete for larger projects. WRN will now offer its clients a more comprehensive product inventory in ingest, playout, streaming, encoding and transcoding.

David Treadway, Managing Director of WRN, says of the deal: "As a reasonably small but competitive player, WRN is already internationally renowned in the radio sector, although traditionally less known for our TV services despite the fact that we already have a substantial TV client list. The acquisition of TSI sends out a clear message to the international broadcast industry that TV is now very much part of our inventory, with playout, streaming and encoding services at the forefront of the services we offer. We look forward to working with TSI's existing clients alongside WRN's established customer base and further building on both companies' reputations for innovation, flexibility, excellence and service delivery.

If you would like to know more about the acquisition, or you are a TSI customer who would like to meet the WRN Team, please contact sales@wrn.org to make an appointment.

Mass Encoding Project for MUTV
WRN has successfully completed a mass encoding project and the instigation of a bespoke asset management solution for Manchester United TV (MUTV). MUTV approached WRN's Content Management Services arm for a solution for ingest of its significant tape archive, consisting of Premier and Champions League football footage, reserve matches, Youth Team games and training sessions. WRN provided a workflow evaluation in order to ascertain the best technology solution for MUTV going forward.

As part of the deal, WRN ingested tape assets to IMX 30, QuickTime and the content was then stored within a bespoke digital archive, designed especially by WRN. Once the assets had been processed, WRN created two LTO4 data tapes for deep archive and disaster recovery purposes. A WRN-provided asset management solution was instigated once the system was successfully integrated into MUTV's facilities. The system creates low-resolution proxy files that enable MUTV staff to browse the archive, access content from their desktop and edit the material.

Workflows will be improved as MUTV's editorial team will have access to the digital content library, whilst subscribers to MUTV will benefit from the availability of additional, reversioned content from the MUTV archives. Importantly, a turnkey storage and asset management solution gives MUTV the ability to speed up the productivity and quality of the channel and maximise efficiency by reducing tape-handling.

WRN Improves Digital Workflow for Manchester United TV

London, September 28, 2009: The global broadcast and transmission solutions company, WRN, today announces that it has successfully completed a mass encoding project and the instigation of a bespoke asset management solution for Manchester United TV (MUTV).

MUTV approached WRN's Content Management Services arm (formerly known as TSI Broadcast) for a solution for ingest of its significant tape archive, consisting of Premier and Champions League football footage, reserve matches, Youth Team games and training sessions. WRN provided a workflow evaluation in order to ascertain the best technology solution for MUTV going forward.

As part of the deal, WRN ingested tape assets to IMX 30, QuickTime and the content was then stored within a bespoke digital archive, especially designed by WRN. Once the assets had been processed, WRN created two LTO4 data tapes for deep archive and disaster recovery purposes.

Once the system was successfully integrated into MUTV's facilities, a WRN-provided asset management solution was instigated.

"Our contract with WRN means that we now have a new workflow solution that will not only improve the delivery of our content, but also create a platform to improve our productivity and performance at a technical level. WRN's expert consultancy and insight into digital workflows has enabled MUTV to integrate a technology solution that increases our efficiency and most importantly, improves the quality of services we deliver to our subscribers," added Sameer Pabari, Managing Director, MUTV.

"The deal with MUTV is further evidence that video encoding is an essential part of our business strategy and is a natural progression following the recent acquisition of TSI Broadcast. It is also proof of our ability to offer full-service digital workflow solutions in a growing market sector," commented David Treadway, Managing Director of WRN. "We are pleased and delighted to now count MUTV as part of WRN's prestigious and expanding client portfolio."

For more information on WRN's services, please contact sales@wrn.org
